Ideal Reel for Trout BFS

“Casting” is truly a fun part of trout bfs and reel’s spec and performance are extremely important.

Shallow spool is a must for greater start-up inertia for technical casting methods such as flip cast.

Lighter the spool (weight combining line) is, require less rod swing speed.

High speed retrieve is necessary for up-cross approach in fast current.
Good to have wider retrievable speed range, slowing down is easier than turning handle faster.

Durability is also important factor when selecting model because falling and slipping is part of the game, strong construction of the reel will withstand the most of unexpected incidents in backcountry.

Ideally each arm is dedicated to do cast or retrieve.

If the preferred casting arm is right, then left-hand retrieve model should be selected to eliminate down time switching hand.

Twitching minnow in fast-pace can be done easier with  the dominate arm.

Selecting the shape between round and low profile could be personal preference.

More surface attached to the palm, better leverage it gives especially during the large trout fight.

Material is another factor between 2 shapes, most round profile models are made out of aluminum which offer superior drag and solid retrieve feel.

Sub 30F temperature is another element fact to consider when selecting the material.

Aluminum becomes cold as ice, magnesium and graphite are much milder to the human skin in extreme cold condition.

Smoothness of the drag is extremely important to eliminate line break and hook out.

Also, proper drag setting will avoid blank breakage.

It’s good habit to loosen the drag pressure anytime when reel is not in use to keep the drag system in top condition.

Trout’s lips are softer than many other lure targeting species, until they grow to 20 inch.

They can rip their lips and get away if drag is set too tight.

Servicing drag by applying manufacturer suggested grease at least once a year can increase the landing ratio.

Trout bfs only require minimal number of reels. Ideal to carry back-up reel with you when entering remote areas because unexpected backlash with thin diameter PE line (braid) can be unfixable.

Slip and fall into river can put fine river sand into the reel, in between gear teeth and tight gap areas such as spool edge.

The reel must be overhauled before turning handle to minimize the further damage to the moving parts.

Investing in the two dream models and take good care is the key in trout bfs.

Well-engineered, constructed and built specifically for bfs model are no comparison to non-bfs models and helps to create the unforgettable moments.

Vintage models are fun and stylish if the conversion is done correctly.

The cast-feel of the vintage reels are so raw and pleasurable.

Replacing spool and bearings are minimal requirement, upgrading to hi-speed gears, smoother drag washers, lightweight warm shaft and a dressy handle will complete the conversion but finding the reel with straight frame with minimal damage to side plates is first challenge.

Selecting model is certainly up to personal preference, but Shimano’s FTB braking system provides the ideal brake force for trout bfs that is engineered by genius individuals.

Start-up inertia and how brake force disappears at the end of the cast are advantages characteristic of the FTB system.

The precisely adjustable brake force range is also ideal for swapping minnows and handling wind conditions.

Tempo and rhythm are key to enjoyable trout bfs approach, last thing we need is to fight the equipment in the backcountry.

Choose your model wisely.
